Abstract

Every nation’s wealth or poverty depends to a large extent, on the quality of her university education. The poorly educated face little better than dull and unexpecting prospects of lives of quite desperation (Babalola, Adedeji and Arwat, 2007). This paper examined the quality assurance in the assessment of students’ academic performance in Nigerian universities. The study used a survey design. The population consisted of 1250 lecturers and students drawn from the university of Calabar and Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH), Calabar. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 50 lecturers and 150 students as the sample of the study. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Four research hypotheses were formulated and tested using t-test at .05 level of significance. The findings revealed among others that, there is no significant difference in the mean responses of lecturers and students on the strategies for assuring quality in the assessment of students academic performance in the two Universities studied in Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that adequate funding of the universities should be a priority of the government to enable procurement of instruments/facilities for assessment of students academic performance in the Universities.
