Abstract

With reference to phenomenology, sociology and spatial aesthetics this study investigates the effectiveness of public art within hospitals, based on a comparative case study of Wyong and Balmain hospitals, NSW, Australia. The intention is to produce a series of digital images that reflect the preferences and perspectives of elderly patients and their family members. This case study employs a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods to determine whether the quality and subject matter of imagery can alleviate the pain, anxiety and boredom of waiting. The study addresses the significance of art and health, and how the public can contribute to the content and intention of public art.
