Abstract

Over the last two decades, “Clostridium difficile” infection (CDI) rates have increased significantly in the Western world, making it an epidemic. CDI is one of the main causes of illness and increasing health care costs among aging populations. Being over the age of 65 is, on its own, an important risk factor. This paper investigates strategies for improving preventive measures and suggests that the human and economic costs of failing to do so will be high.
