Abstract

This paper contemplates the theme of placial memory in heritage conservation. It provides an existential-phenomenological conceptualisation of placial memory as human shared re-membering ‘in’ place: pointing out the inherent multiplicity of mnemonic re-collection, and calling for open and non-exclusive participation in conserving this living heritage. A short case example on conservation of a cultural heritage site is used as illustration. The paper further explores what it terms, the ‘art of circumspective forgetting’, with a view to providing common ground for ‘letting-be’ placial memory in its ontological multiplicity.
