Abstract

Visual communication is an intermediary between human experience and visual expressions. Critical to the creative process is the creator’s ability to translate verbal ideas into a defined message for an intended audience. Any attempt to visualize ideas into a visual form that informs, promotes, and persuades can be a challenge because of three interlinked factors: composition, content and context. Understanding how to translate an abstract idea, which corresponds with how it is represented, is key to the communication process. The paper discusses two opposites: “Symmetry for harmony” and “Asymmetry for variety” as a mental activity to provide valuable stimulus for creative thinking. The proposed theory has an epistemological basis for instructing and inventing new ideas, as well as pedagogical arguments and practical processes in the classroom.
