Abstract

: Since the creation of the IQ test in the 1900s, there has been an increase in research about what intelligence is and how it works. Initially, the term “intelligence” was defined as a unitary trait that can be measured. However, it was not until 1983 that the psychologist Howard Gardner changed that view in his book “Frames of Mind.” Gardner challenged the traditional view of intelligence, establishing a different definition of intelligence, a definition that revolutionized the academic world, making headway for future investigations. The following study is a preliminary analysis of long-term research. The focus of the study was to observe the use of “Project Spectrum” activities in an English class taught as a second and foreign language and the improvement in curricular competencies, learning, and performance of fifth-grade foreign language students in a Puerto Rican public school. Data collection was performed over a period of five months using English subject tests established by the scholar curriculum. The results revealed the existence of a distinct trend toward significance in the comparison of two groups (experimental and control). Based on the results, the investigation obtained positive outcomes. The implementation of the “Project Spectrum” activities will cause a change in the improvement of the curricular competencies, learning, and performance of the foreign language students. Still, to obtain a greater significance in the results, it is necessary to continue the study until the end of the course year.
