Abstract

The relevance of this research lies in an increased interest among modern literary circles in the study of literary trends of the twentieth century, particularly modernism and realism and their means of expression. In this connection, the aim of this study is to analyze the works in terms of literary, linguistic, and partly historical aspects, to draw general conclusions, and assess the prospects for further study of the writers of the World War I period to better understand their individual styles and artistic methods through which the main ideas are expressed and moral values conveyed. The basis of the research methodology is a literary and artistic, lexicological, and semantic analysis of English and French literary works in conjunction with comparative and historical methods, and generalizing the results, identifying common characteristics and features, and the principle of using a stylistic accent of realism parallel to artistic methods of modernism despite the significant differences between these approaches. During this research project, it was concluded that writers used both English and French to convey their perception of World War I, describe individual and societal experiences, and express ideas such as humanity, patriotism, mutual assistance, and the desire for peace using artistic imagery and linguistic techniques. In doing so, they also demonstrated their connection to the contemporary world and emphasized values that are still relevant to current generations. The materials of this article are of practical relevance for a wide range of readers, especially literary scholars, linguists, historians, and teachers who study the period of World War I and the cultural heritage of this period.
