Abstract

In this age of breakneck technological development, of ideological and political turmoil, it has become increasingly important to explore the relationship between knowledge, wisdom, and habit. Whereas knowledge is a frequent topic of discourse (we even refer to the economy as being “knowledge-driven”), it is rather seldom that we hear serious discussion on wisdom and habit (for instance, few speak of a “wisdom-driven” culture). But both wisdom and habit play a crucial role in actual acts, character formation, and selfhood. Using the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, Buddha, and Proust, this paper explores the connections between knowledge, wisdom, and habit.
