Abstract

Despite the high prevalence of breast cancer, the survival rate has improved in recent years. In most countries, it is recommended that women of all ages perform breast self-examination (BSE) monthly, including nurses. The main purpose of this study is to survey the BSE practices of Macau nurses, and examine factors that differentiate between BSE performers and non-performers. A proportional sample of female registered nurses working in the hospital (N=84) and community health centers (N=33) in Macau was surveyed using self-report questionnaires. The questionnaires were used for purposes that reflect the knowledge of breast cancer, and the Health Belief Model was used to examine the interrelationships between key measures. The results of this study will be of value to those interested in female nurses’ wellness promotion and public health. The findings will also be of interest to those planning for BSE education programs that target both registered and student nurses.
