Abstract

A pilot questionnaire study was done among students with a disability in the Department of Communication Science at Unisa. This paper is presented against the background of challenges faced by adult students with disabilities at an open and distance education institution, and addresses the theoretical foundation and importance of sight and modes of interaction with study material. It reports on findings and highlights challenges faced by both academics and students. Recommendations, based on findings of the pilot study, observation and liaison with students, are made.
