Abstract

This panel will compare and contrast various curricular models in dance degree programs in Europe, Spain, and the Florida State University (FSU) in the United States. Nelida Mones, Ph.D., will discuss the differences between the two primary curricular models in northern and southern Europe. Carmen Gimenez, Ph.D., will discuss recent developments in Spain, which have accredited Conservatory programs in dance (as well as in design, theater, music, ceramics, and glass making). Dr. Mones and Dr. Gimenez will address the forthcoming codification of names of European Union course titles to be implemented in 2010-2011 with the intention of unifying EU curricula. They will talk about the challenges facing institutions as a result of this process and the curricular fragmentation that separates the practical, theoretical, and pedagogical. Tricia Young, Ph.D., will discuss the MA in American Dance Studies, implemented at Florida State University (FSU) in 2001, and developed to enhance students’ education by creating and maintaining fluidity between history, theory, and the practice of dance. Jennifer Atkins, Ph.D., will discuss two programs within the FSU Department of Dance: First, the Maggie Allysee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) and second, “FSU in NYC” that provide students actual opportunities to experience, first-hand, an integrated approach to the practice, history, and administration of dance, which establishes professional working relationships between the university students and the professional dance world. The panel will be moderated by Ester Vendrell, Ph.D.
