Abstract

This paper is based on a research study on students’ and tutors’ personal constructs on writing research proposals. A personal construct repertory grid modified/developed by Jamilah, Bahiyah, Lee and Siti Hamin (2004) based on Kelly (1955), Riley (1985) and Jamilah (2001) is used to explore students’ and tutors’ personal thoughts, opinions and feelings. In this study, twenty undergraduate students doing their BA in English Language Studies at a local institute of higher learning in Malaysia of different proficiency levels (high, medial and low performance) were selected to participate. Two tutors who taught the Research Methodology course were also selected. The results show that students as well as tutors have their own constructs for writing research proposals and doing research. Based on the findings in this study, the implications in teaching and learning will be discussed.
