Abstract

Learning and innovation skills increasingly are being recognized as the skills that separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in the 21st century, and those who are not. A focus on creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration is essential to prepare students for the future. 21st century curriculum and instruction enable innovative learning methods that integrate the use of supportive technologies, inquiry-and problem-based approaches and higher order thinking skills. Virtual museums require students to use research skills. It motivates student learning through high-interest activities, makes them engaged in higher-level thinking, enables teachers to infuse 21st Century skills into traditional learning, allows for differentiated instruction/learning and offers a form of interactive learning. This paper provides suggestions for adapting visual arts curricula of middle school with the advantages of using virtual museums in order to meet the unique needs of the learner in the 21st century.
