Abstract

National Standards for Quality Online Teaching state that engaging students in the learning process and promoting learning through group interaction is one of their designated, high quality online teaching standards. However, the lack of social interaction has become an issue in online courses, especially in an asynchronous environment. The purpose of this study is to discover in-service teachers’ perspectives of typical online course interaction, and if the group interaction is enhanced through the use of an online course meeting tool—in this case Wimba. The study was conducted in three Multicultural Education asynchronous online courses for one semester. Data were collected on in-service teachers’ perspectives of interactions with classmates, the instructor, learning materials, and technology.
