Abstract

Climate change poses serious threats to economies and ecological systems around the world. As a result, under the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing these threats is a priority. Climate change communication has emerged as an essential intervention for facilitating community-based livelihood adaptation in regions where people are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Studies on climate change communication have focused on public understanding, the role of local institutions, media coverage and framing, media effects, and risk perception of climate change, and little attention has been given to how rural communities adapt using climate change information. This study aimed to understand how climate information influences community-based livelihood adaptation to climate change. Using convenience sampling, 239 respondents were interviewed. The results show that climate information facilitates community-based livelihood adaptation but that the nature and mode of communication undermine effective community adaptation.
