Abstract

The passing rate of undergraduate students of Principles of Accounting is often quite low at many institutions. The traditional approach of assigning students to read the textbook, followed by working problems in class and then testing the students over their comprehension does not appear to be effective with today’s Generation Y students. These students have grown up with technology and the ability to find needed information quickly and easily. One professor has modified the conventional method to integrate the use of online tools in Principles of Accounting to attempt to better reach these students. After two semesters, the pass rate improved by approximately 12% over previous academic years. Students were surveyed regarding the approach and the feedback was quite positive with many students indicating that the technology used had a favorable impact on their performance. This paper communicates the approach implemented at one institution to improve success in Principles of Accounting.
