Abstract

This is an investigation into the traditional handwoven ikat fabrics produced by the Lao Krang ethnic group of central Thailand. A qualitative investigation was conducted in Ban Rai, Uthai Thani, to examine 100 samples of traditionally woven fabric by Mrs. Jampee Tamasiri, a local weaver, and her ancestors. Interviews were conducted with other community weavers to determine the nature of Lao Krang fabric and its role in maintaining local ethnicity. Results found that traditional designs and practices remain similar to those practices by ancestral weavers. However, there have been changes to the color palette with which the Lao Krang are synonymous. The research discusses the impact this has on the Lao Krang identity and provides suggestions for future development.
