Abstract

Headlines are influential texts that endeavour to shape our view of the world and our language; over the years, they have attracted much interest. There is a sizeable body of research that examines their various aspects. However, one area has not been fully addressed - headlines on the front pages of newspapers that look at gender representation. This comparative longitudinal study strives to fill the gap by examining the representation of male and female news actors in the front page headlines of two national broadsheets, The Guardian (UK) and Izvestiia (RU), in order to assess how balanced the reporting of the individuals in these groups is and if change over time can be detected. Findings presented in this paper show that there is a minimal increase in the representation of women.
