Abstract

Veda Dharma, also called the “Sanatana Dharma” has holds and folds on mankind for nurturing noble character needed to attain the life’s goals or purusharthas: Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. It encompasses religion, and drives individuals to attain higher levels of human expectations, and thus sustains order and well-being in the society. In my 30-minute presentation, I will discuss excerpts pertaining to holds and folds of Veda Dharma as seen in ancient texts such as Rg Veda, Yajur Veda and Mahabharata, and from viewpoint of Adi Shankaracharya. I will also describe foundations of “Yoga” or practice, as well as “Samskruti” or culture relating to Veda Dharma that has evolved over the times to the current day. I will particularly explain how they have been simplified in the form of activities such as Vratas (i.e., vows)/GayatriUpasana (i.e., meditation) and have made it more convenient for wider adoption at all levels in the society: men, women and children. In conclusion, I will outline how the holds and folds of Veda Dharma have regulated the society and have helped realize the vision of “Vasudaika Kutumbam”.
