Abstract

Recent studies have highlighted the interactive role of the natural environment in the formation and evolution of cultural changes. This indicates that, if proper cultural management is ensured within its original environment, and if proper environmental management is ensured within its supporting culture, then a sustainable perspective may be achieved. In this spirit, cultural ecology attempts to integrate social, economic, and material concepts into ecological relationships, thus providing the theoretical background for the creation of educational software. At the same time, it is also a research tool for a doctoral thesis, and includes activities in the hypermedia application context of the Google SketchUp software. This research tool aims to investigate the contemporary and historical relationship of humans within a geographical area and with their natural environment. Due to its innovative organization in terms of structure and content, it contributes to the environmental education of students, as well as to their awareness on environmental issues, such as the sustainable management of the St. George Krimnon Monastery in Zakynthos. This survey evaluates the students’ learning process and the changes in their environmental behavior. The study results showed that the construction of a learning environment by means of information and communication technologies (ICTs) supports the knowledge acquired by the student in the best possible way, and promotes the sustainable management of the St. George monastery in Zakynthos.
