Abstract

Globalism is changing the nature of the international political environment by structuring interactions between states and re-structuring their capacities to engage with each other. Understanding how globalism influences the construction of identities and ideas within and between states will enable a re-orienting of sovereign statehood and encourage new forms of international order. Globalism has become a contemporary structure of International Relations characterised by constitutive dynamics of order. While the concept of ‘structure’ is often used in International Relations, the dynamics and constitutions of such structures are rarely examined. This paper argues that examining the dynamics and constitutive elements of globalism will enable fuller understandings of the roles and capacities of contemporary states.
