Abstract

Gender egalitarianism is a subject of growing importance. In January 2012, we conducted a survey with a sample of 193 students of economics from China, France, Germany, Mexico, Russia, and Turkey. The focus of this study was to investigate how nationality and gender influence students' career expectations. A further aim was to examine whether the results correlate with Hofstede’s masculinity/femininity dimension and with the two GLOBE study sub-dimensions of gender egalitarianism regarding “society values” and “society practice.” We found that our results did not correlate with Hofstede's except for one country (China). The correlation with the sub-dimensions of the GLOBE study was, with one exception (Russia), much higher, which indicates that the masculinity/femininity dimension articulated by Hofstede needs to be questioned.
