Functional Exercise Training to Enhance Emotional Well-being ...
Abstract
Data reported in this paper suggests that functional exercise training may enhance a positive sense of emotional health in middle school aged students. Two series of exercise groups, considered pilot studies, were initiated. Nineteen participants completed the intervention, which was the functional exercise training. A unique feature of these pilot studies is the qualitative data that was gleaned from the participants’ exit interviews at the conclusion of the intervention. Functional training integrates a variety of exercises that work on flexibility, core, balance, strength, and power. It also usually includes aerobic interventions, strength-training interventions, skills training, or some combination of these activities. The qualitative data suggests that the interventions may have a positive impact on the participants’ emotional health.
