Abstract

It is crucial to continue the design similarity from the standard document to the real application to ensure that a standardized design is implemented and aligned with the intention of the government institution. Design continuity also aids recognition as similar designs are more memorable. It is theorized that adequate road signs installations are capable of reducing road accidents. Building from this and the observation that Malaysia has one of the highest numbers of road accident cases in Southeast Asia involving school children, this research assesses twenty-five road signs—observed as artifacts—around the area of ten schools in Klang Valley, Malaysia. This research evaluates if the signs complied with the Public Works Department of Malaysia standards by employing the Compositional Interpretation (CI) model. This study’s findings are presented based on the graphical segregation categories such as color similarity, typeface, and measurement. The results of the observed artifacts are also presented. The findings may help to trigger better compliance with the design standards since proper road signs installations can prevent road accidents.
