Abstract
The central thesis of this paper, which also explains the choice of the title, is the following: If it is true that a scientific field is defined by the questions that it seeks to answer, the recent course of sociology seems to document a transition from problems to cases or, more precisely, from the “social question” to the management of circumstances.
