Abstract

Shanxi is a northern province of China with a great literary tradition. Its literature has played an important role in the East-West literary exchanges throughout history. From the New Era to the new Millennium, more and more Shanxi literature is gaining the attention of international readers. Relevant research began to appear in recent years, but not much has been done to give a comprehensive view of the reception of Shanxi literature abroad. This article intends to survey the translation of contemporary Shanxi literature worldwide to illuminate its general reception. By collecting and examining relevant publishing information about the foreign translation of contemporary Shanxi literature, I will analyze the complex issues regarding the reception mechanism of contemporary Chinese literature abroad. The focus of my analysis will be on the role of writers, translators, readers, literary agents, publishers, academic, and popular media in this process. By so doing, I hope to uncover the aesthetic, cultural, and ideological factors influencing the reception of contemporary Chinese literature in the world.
