Abstract

This paper touches on the socio-cultural, religious and historical discourses influencing mother-daughter relationships. The paper focuses on the relationships between mothers and daughters as well as mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. The cultural discourses shaping the Hindu marriage over the past hundred years is also briefly explored, and it is argued that it is mainly the prevalent patriarchal discourses which are the main cause of the rifts within the mother-daughter relations.
