Abstract

Graphic design and dance are visual arts. They fill an empty space, the page and the stage respectively. To dance is to move in a graceful and rhythmical way, the word itself denotes motion. A dancer uses a series of movements to create an aesthetically pleasing work. As a designer, type and image become the choreographed elements. While different in mediums, dance and design embody similar principles such as rhythm, contrast and balance. Using the experience of dance as a point of entry, explorations involving typography, graphic forms and three-dimensional objects were created. Dance has shaped my design methodology, leading my work down various trajectories. In looking to dance as a new source of inspiration, work was created that challenges and informs the dimensional experience of movement, time and space. Looking to movement as a form of visual communication, this paper explores a relationship between dance and graphic design, while examining creative process.
