Abstract

Osteoarthritis is a chronic joint inflammatory disease which currently affects more than 1.3 million Australians. The effects of osteoarthritis are physical, psychological and social. The role of social networks on health and coping is well recognised. This paper reports on a small online qualitative study of how a group of older adults with osteoarthritis describe their social lives. Discovering what they enjoy gives an immediate link to their social connections and an understanding of possible intervention points for social support initiatives for osteoarthritis.
