Abstract

It has been suggested that academic capital is one of the major factors affecting academics’ career advancement. This study is derived from the fact that the representation of Australian women academics at senior ranks is disproportionately low compared to that of men academics, and this leads to a question on the factors influencing the academic capital of the women academics. Academic capital is usually reflected in the triumvirate of research, teaching, and administration. This study looks into the effects of individual, interpersonal and structural factors on the academic capital of women academics. In addition, this study also explores the effects of the interpersonal factor on the structural factor. The paper provides some insight into these issues by proposing a model which links the four factors and using the structural equation modeling (SEM) based technique to analyze the relationships among the constructs.
