Abstract

This paper is aimed at introducing the use of straw (pennisetium SP); stems of a Nigerian grass as a medium for artistic expression. The material is presently being put into many traditional non-artistic uses in the Northern and middle belt areas of Nigeria. Its age old value as a medium of non-artistic expressions has remained, and allowing for newer experimentations. This paper will therefore expose such new applications of the material, which has been successfully tested as a durable artistic medium of expression in the two dimensional art forms.
