Abstract

Incremental housing has been praised for decades as a plausible housing solution, especially for the urban poor. However, the pivotal factors concerning incremental housing and how it delivers solutions have not been investigated thoroughly. Thus, this study aims to investigate these factors and explain the process of incremental housing in Kampung (Central Jakarta). This study employs the case study method using qualitative context analysis and finds that intergenerational wealth transfer and earnings and savings of the household members and their relatives’ monthly income are the sources of funds for incremental housing. In terms of decreasing the cost, local builders, household members, experienced neighbors, and relatives help the respondents to apply better housing quality to ensure the safety of the household members. The delivery of incremental housing also corresponds with the lifespan of the family members to accommodate both domestic and economic activities, which are essential for their survival in the capital city. These types of activity demand a growth mode from the horizontal and vertical aspects to interior space arrangements according to the availability of land and funds. However, it cannot cope with the number of additional residents and activities in the house, which fails to provide a bigger space for each resident.
