Abstract

This article reports on a project designed to further the UK National Health Service (NHS) Plan in recognising the importance of attending to and rectifying social exclusion that impact negatively on health, and preventing those who experience such adversity from participating fully in society. The Plan recognises that members of the UK black and minority ethnic communities are disproportionately affected by poverty and the ill health that is associated with this. The project involved the recruitmet and delvelopment of members of the local black and minority ethnic communities to act as community health faciliattors and conduits of health messages, and in turn promote greater collaboration between the local community and the University. Findings are discussed, conclusions drawn and wide-ranging recommendations are made.
