Abstract

This paper demonstrates the student projects in the Department of Architecture, Chu Hai College of Higher Education (CHARCH) supervised by the author which incorporate film as the medium of architectural study. It starts with the research on Eisenstein’s film editing theory of "dialectic montage" and the analysis of his films through the themes of movement and rhythm. By the filmic tools developed from the film study, the montage theory based on the same themes is then applied to reinterpret different cases of architectural space and cityscape. Among these cases, Central-Mid-Levels Escalator System in Hong Kong is focused upon for its rhythmic moving images providing an experience comparable to filmic montage. Finally, design proposals for the reorganization of the escalator system as a moving street attempting to edit space with the parameter of time are also shown. It is found that interdisciplinary research and design studio incorporating film art worth further organized for the architectural programme to stimulate the students’ sense of mobility in space.
