Abstract

In this paper, the characteristics of outsourcing and subcontracting in Thailand and economic and social development under outsourcing and subcontracting are presented. This study presents three case studies that were surveyed from 2008-2010. The results indicate that the upstream of outsourcing and subcontracting activities came from foreign brand owners, while the downstream is comprised of villagers or household enterprises in the rural areas of Thailand. In addition, in terms of economic and social development, the researcher found that outsourcing and subcontracting provides benefits to both the outsourcer and the subcontractor. For instance, outsourcers may reduce costs and accept more orders. In addition, subcontractors can improve their quality of life by increasing income and working at home, closer to their families.
