Abstract

This paper introduces Reflective Communication Approach (RCA) which is designed for ESL teachers and students to conduct guided independent language learning (GILL) with the integration of Information Technology (IT) and classroom activities. The approach was used in a 3-month English learning programme specially designed for a group of Year 2 students studying Diploma of Secretarial and Administrative Studies in a Hong Kong tertiary institution. The results of the study revealed that the students had favorable attitudes towards 1) the guided independent language learning (GILL); 2) the integration of Information Technology for English Learning and 3) the whole GILL programme designed in accordance with RCA. The students found the programme not only useful in motivating them to continue ILL but also helpful in improving their English.
