Abstract

This article addresses the principles of developing the architecture of a modern residential area in St. Petersburg while incorporating distinctive elements of the city’s historical identity. The authors describe recent examples of modern architecture in European cities that manifest historical traditions in relation to specific contexts. They propose applying to the new architecture a design code or guidelines shaped by the historical patterns of the city, and of the immediately adjacent area as well, while allowing some flexibility in the choice of architectural concepts. This is appropriate when a new residential area or district is created in the historical city. The authors present the results of research performed in the course of teaching at the Department of Architectural Design of the St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
