Abstract

Non-profit organizations desire the benefits of having a website but often do not have staff or volunteers with information technology expertise. Many local non-profit organizations also have very limited funding. As more universities incorporate service-learning into their curriculum the opportunity exists for getting websites built without cost to the organization. How should these sites be designed so that they are maintained once the class that created them has ended? This proposal presents a case study of having a graduate software development class develop a website for a local organization. The class developed a database and user interface that allows multiple levels of users to update information on the site. The administrators of the system are not required to have technical expertise in any programming or scripting language or any experience in using a database. We present the system design, the customers’ experience with using the system, and areas for improvement.
