Abstract

This paper explores the use of process art to break through creative and emotional blocks in order to experience more authenticity(creative flow)in daily life. "Process art" requires rapid, intuitive working methods to access the unconscious mind. Flow is an optimal state of intrinsic motivation characterized by a feeling of being in the moment. It has been described as freedom, personal fulfillment, and maximizing skill. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi first proposed the idea of flow. Process art making is an effective way to open pathways to creative flow. Experiments by the author reveal that creative paralysis in almost any area can be unblocked through a combination of self-awareness exercises combined with visual expression. The visual results often reveal startling new issues and feelings that the "artist" was unaware of before. Making process art allows individuals to experience a feeling of flow which translates into more focus, greater productivity and a heightened sense of well-being. The more clear and focused we are about our goals and unconscious personal desires, the closer we come to living happier, more authentic lives.
