Abstract

The emergence and subsequent development of cyberculture have been themes of interest to many scholars, predominantly representing philosophy and anthropology. Building on previous work within the extant literature (Alava, 2004; Finkelkraut, 2001; Levy, 1995, 2005; Lovink, 2004; Peraya, 2000), this study highlights the cultural realities of cyberspace and to theorize on the ensuing relationss among them. First, we explore the cultural dimension of cyberspace, after which we posit that the cyberculture discourse occupies a space along the continuum represented by the educational desiderata of universalization and differentiation. Then, an examination of the interconnections between the “social presence” and “cultural presence” is provided, in order to lay out, in the concluding section, a series of future directions of research about the twin character of cyberculture as a unifying and differentiating agent.
