Abstract

There is a growing need for the management of projects in various software organizations. Project success and failure are rarely described in absolute terms. Our knowledge and understanding of critical success and failure factors as well as how to measure them have great importance for effective software project management. Several studies on the success and failure of software projects have been predominantly conducted in the Western settings. Moreover, the results seem to be inconclusive. This study attempts to identify the top five reasons that constitute the success and failure of software projects in the Indian settings. The results show that a uniform pattern as compared to the extant literature does not emerge. The authors have discussed the results and have given implications for the organization.
