Abstract

For various philosophical and extra-philosophical reasons analytic philosophy of religion has moved in a direction that raises questions about the role of religious beliefs in academic philosophy. This article will first bring forward some general observations on contemporary analytic Christian philosophy of religion. After that it turns to explore recent critical comments on the current condition of this field of study. These controversies raise further questions concerning the general aim of philosophical investigation and its relation to religion, which are the main foci of this article. In the last section of the article these questions are examined from the point view of the Wittgensteinian approach to philosophy of religion as developed by Rush Rhees and D. Z. Phillips.
