Abstract

The study examines community members providing mental health support for Asian American older adults. More specifically, the roles, challenges, and suggestions for culturally responsive services are explored. A qualitative methodology was used to conduct in-depth interviews with twenty-six community helpers. Major themes that emerged include: 1) community helpers providing mental health assistance; 2) community helpers lacking expertise; and 3) community helpers’ suggestions of non-stigmatizing strategies to address mental health challenges. The findings suggest that incorporating bicultural and bilingual community helpers as paraprofessionals in integrated health care can promote the well-being of Asian American older adults. Greater collaboration between the Asian American community and the integrated healthcare system can help to increase well-being and quality of life among older adults.
