Abstract

The poverty reduction initiatives taken so far in Nigeria remain inadequate with unsatisfactory and unimpressive results. After clarifying basic concepts in the work the paper raises some fundamental issues attributable to the weakness of past poverty reduction initiatives. As a precondition for a realistic anti-poverty agenda, emphasis is laid on the essence of encouraging the already discouraged poor to participate in the poverty reduction programmes’ implementation and sustenance. To this end, the paper stresses the need to foster community education. The study holds the view that community education can offer invaluable assistance in mobilizing human and material community resources for poverty reduction initiatives to thrive.
