Community as Classroom
Abstract
Service learning and language learning share many of the same goals, such as interacting with others within the world community. Therefore, it only stands to reason that service-learning would be an excellent asset to language teaching. In this paper, both how and why to incorporate service-learning into the language classroom will be discussed, with a specific example of what could be done in Intermediate or Advanced Spanish courses at the university/college level. This practical model involves: service learning possibilities, reflection activities, a community government simulation exercise, and student reactions.
