Abstract

This study investigates communication apprehension (CA), when using English (L2), among first-year master of arts (MA) students majoring in English at a public university in Bangkok, Thailand. Students of different birth orders were found to have different CA in the dimension of public speaking. Furthermore, students with income differences were found to have different CA in the dimensions of group discussions, dyadic conversations, and trait-like CA. Based on the research results, faculty members of the MA program may gain insights into how their students of different demographics feel when they communicate in English in different contexts. Consequently, English courses and approaches can be designed more appropriately for the benefit of diverse students. With insight, kindness, and understanding from faculty members, students can better navigate communication obstacles and succeed in their studies, enabling a better quality of life for them after graduation.
