Abstract

An empirical study of information system use by laboratory professionals reveals that medical technologists are using laboratory information systems less effectively, or meaningfully, than medical laboratory technicians. This comes at a time when the needs of the medical technologist profession are shifting from analytic in nature to consultative. This paper examines the significance of the problem, how cognitive dissonance theory can be used to explain it, and future research.
