Abstract

This paper discusses challenges of applying the American design curricula in the Gulf Region. The aim of this paper is to identify challenges and propose suggestions to improve the application of such programs. The case study outlines the application of the American design curricula at the Scientific College of Design in Muscat, Oman since 2004. Specific challenges and proposed modifications will be identified. The discussion includes students’ general characteristics, programs applied during seminal years, assessment of outcomes and challenges, limitations of discussion, and proposed suggestions for future modification and possibilities of filling the gaps between a Western curricula and a Gulf country. Challenges addressed are proficiency in English, critical thinking, visual literacy, and rigorous application and academic demands.
