Abstract

Studies that refer to migratory dynamics in Mexico generally focus either on the population that Mexico sends (expels) to the United States, or on the population from other countries (mainly Central America) that transit through Mexico to get to the US. The intent of this research is to characterize the Central Americans that remain in Mexico; a group that has rarely been made visible in academic studies, but that is becoming progressively more important. This population flow (movement) is essential to understanding the current migration dynamics of Mexico and the region. Therefore, our primary objectives are to analyze the socio-demographics, labor characteristics, and geographic distribution of Central Americans living in Mexico in 2015, and to highlight certain factors related to these immigrants’ social and economic insertion into their destination country. To do this, our study used both information from the 2015 Intercensal Survey and an analysis of semi-structured interviews.
