Abstract

India, which is one of the emerging economies, has progressed well in terms of social, economic, and technological development. Further, modern Indian society has liberalized women to utilize their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the workplace without forfeiting their feminism. This progressive approach has resulted into a large number of women entering the corporate workforce. Our initial survey reveals that while the presence of women in the workforce is remarkable, women face unequal treatment and discrimination as they try to progress in their career path. This restricts their entry into senior positions within the organisations. Yet we also found that the Generation Y women who have recently entered the workforce are well-educated and equipped with the desired skill set. They are ambitious and capable of climbing the corporate ladder, if given equal opportunities. The research study focuses especially on Generation Y women professionals to understand the inequalities they face in the form of organisational and individual barriers and its impact on their career advancement. We plan to conduct an extensive study to understand the future career challenges for Generation Y women in India and the potential barriers they might face in changing times.
